I manage a fleet of vehicles for a living. I know exactly what every mile costs down to the penny — fuel, tyres, insurance, depreciation, maintenance. It is literally my job. So when I sat down one evening and ran the same analysis on my own personal commute, I was genuinely annoyed at myself for not doing it sooner.
My daily round trip to the depot was 30 miles. Not bad, I thought — plenty of people drive further. But when I totalled the fuel, the accelerated wear on my car, the insurance premium that was higher because of the mileage, and the parking I was paying near the office, it came to over $4,800 a year. That annual number is what your commute costs you in real terms. If it is higher than you expected — and it usually is — do not just stare at it and move on. Compare it with the things people normally debate much more emotionally: the size of a raise, the extra rent for living closer to work, the value of one remote day a week, or the cost of switching to a more efficient car.
If your commute is costing $6,000 to $9,000 a year, that is not a nuisance expense. That is a line item large enough to change whether a job offer is actually better, whether a hybrid schedule matters, or whether moving closer starts to make economic sense.

How to read the estimate
Use the one-trip cost when you want a quick answer for a specific drive. The planned total is more useful for commute budgeting, delivery work, shared travel, or repeat school runs because it multiplies the same route across all entered trips.
The cost-per-100-mi figure makes vehicle comparisons faster than raw trip totals, especially when two routes are different lengths. If your real-world economy is usually worse than the official label, edit the efficiency input downward for MPG or upward for L/100km.
A few things to note. Stop-and-go city driving is substantially less fuel-efficient than highway driving. If your commute involves heavy traffic, your actual fuel consumption is probably 20 to 30% worse than your car’s rated highway efficiency. Morning rush hour in particular tends to be the worst — slow crawls with frequent braking burn fuel at a rate that would make a fleet manager weep.
This is why a commute that looks cheap on paper can end up expensive in practice. The route may only be 14 miles each way, but if 8 of those miles are spent crawling through traffic, your pump receipt will behave more like a much longer trip.
What gas mileage are you really getting?
Most people have a rough idea of their car’s fuel economy, but the real-world number often differs from what the manufacturer advertises. Driving style, tyre pressure, air conditioning use, and the type of driving you do all affect actual consumption.
The simplest way to measure your real fuel economy is the full-tank method: fill your tank completely, reset your trip odometer, drive until you need fuel again, fill up and note how many gallons it took, and divide the distance driven by the gallons used. Do this two or three times and average the results. That is your real-world fuel economy, and it is often a rude surprise.

That second pass matters. Too many people use a guessed MPG number, get a commute cost that feels tolerable, and make a job or housing decision on that basis. Five minutes of better math is cheaper than a year of regretting the route.
The costs beyond fuel
Fuel is easy to calculate because you see it at the pump. The hidden costs are the ones that slowly drain your wallet without ever presenting you with a single, obvious bill:
Depreciation. This is typically the largest cost of car ownership, and it accelerates with mileage. A car driven 25,000 kilometres per year depreciates notably faster than one driven 10,000. If you are adding 15,000 or more commuting kilometres annually, your car is losing value faster than it would sitting in your driveway.
Maintenance and repairs. Every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres brings an oil change, and brake pads, tyres, belts, and filters all have mileage-based replacement intervals. A long commute compresses those intervals into months rather than years.
Insurance. Many insurers price policies partly on annual mileage. A shorter commute — or working from home a few days a week — can sometimes qualify you for a lower-mileage discount.
Parking. If you pay for parking at or near your workplace, that cost goes directly onto your commuting bill. In urban centres, parking alone can run $150 to $300 per month.
Time. This one does not appear on any invoice, but it is real. An hour-long commute each way is ten hours a week — over 500 hours a year — spent in a car instead of with your family, exercising, sleeping, or doing literally anything else. If you value your time at even $15 an hour, that adds $7,500 in opportunity cost to your annual commute.
Tolls. Depending on your route, toll roads, bridge fees, or express-lane charges can quietly add another meaningful monthly bill. People often treat tolls like a convenience purchase, but if you are paying them 220 workdays a year, they belong in the same spreadsheet as fuel and parking.
What can you actually do about it?
Once you see the true cost, the question becomes whether there are realistic ways to reduce it. Here are a few that come up often in my world:
- Negotiate remote work days. Even one or two days working from home per week cuts your commuting costs by 20 to 40%. This is the single most impactful change for most people.
- Carpool. Splitting the drive with one other person halves your fuel and wear costs. Two other people reduces them by two-thirds. Apps and workplace bulletin boards make finding carpool partners easier than ever.
- Optimise your route. Traffic adds fuel cost and time. If a slightly longer route avoids heavy congestion, it may actually be cheaper and faster overall. Test alternatives and measure the difference.
- Maintain your car. Properly inflated tyres, clean air filters, and regular servicing can improve fuel economy by 5 to 10%. It is not dramatic, but over thousands of commuting kilometres it adds up.
- Consider your next vehicle carefully. If you are in the market for a new car, your commute distance should be a major factor. A hybrid or electric vehicle can cut fuel costs dramatically for high-mileage commuters. Run the numbers before you buy.
And one more, because this is the one people avoid: compare commute cost to compensation, not just to habit. If a new job pays $4,000 more a year but adds $6,500 in commuting cost and another 250 hours on the road, that is not a better deal just because the salary is higher. Commute math belongs in job decisions, housing decisions, and return-to-office conversations.
Your commute is probably one of your top three monthly expenses after housing and food. Knowing the actual number — not a vague guess, but the real, calculated cost — puts you in a position to make informed decisions about where you live, where you work, and how you get between the two.
