Cotangent of an angle with undefined-angle detection

The cotangent calculator computes cot(θ) = cos(θ)/sin(θ) for any angle. It detects undefined values at 0°, 180°, and other multiples of 180° where sine is zero.

How cotangent is defined

Cotangent is the reciprocal of tangent: cot(θ) = 1/tan(θ) = cos(θ)/sin(θ). It is undefined wherever sine equals zero — at 0°, 180°, 360°, and all integer multiples of 180°.

The cotangent function has period 180° (pi radians), the same as tangent.

Exact values

Common exact values: cot(30°) = sqrt(3), cot(45°) = 1, cot(60°) = sqrt(3)/3, cot(90°) = 0.

Frequently asked questions

Why is cot(0°) undefined?

Because sin(0°) = 0 and cotangent is cos/sin. Division by zero is undefined.

What is cot(90°)?

0. cos(90°) = 0 and sin(90°) = 1, so cot(90°) = 0/1 = 0.
