Dog age in human years by breed size

A dog years calculator converts your dog's age into an approximate human-equivalent age using size-adjusted rates. Smaller breeds age more slowly after maturity while giant breeds age faster, so a 10-year-old Chihuahua is in a very different life stage from a 10-year-old Great Dane.

How the size-adjusted method works

The old rule of multiplying by 7 has been replaced by veterinary guidelines that account for breed size. All dogs mature rapidly in their first two years: the first year is roughly equivalent to 15 human years and the second adds another 9. After that, each additional year adds 4 human years for small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large, and 7 for giant breeds.

This calculator uses the American Kennel Club size brackets: small (under 9 kg), medium (9–23 kg), large (23–41 kg), and giant (over 41 kg). The boundaries are approximate — some breed-specific charts differ slightly, but these brackets cover the main variation.

Life stages and typical lifespans

Dogs are generally considered puppies until about 1 year, young adults from 1 to 3, adults from 3 to about 7 (varying by size), and seniors from there onwards. Giant breeds enter the senior stage as early as 5 or 6 years, while small breeds may not be considered senior until 10.

Typical lifespans vary considerably: small breeds often live 12 to 16 years, medium breeds 10 to 14, large breeds 9 to 12, and giant breeds 7 to 10. These are averages — individual dogs can live well outside these ranges depending on genetics, diet, and veterinary care.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 7-year rule accurate for dog age?

No. The 7-year multiplier is a rough average that ignores how quickly dogs mature in their first two years and how size affects ageing. A more accurate approach uses 15 for the first year, 9 for the second, then a per-year rate that varies by breed size.

At what age is a dog considered senior?

It depends on size. Small dogs are generally senior around 10–12 years, medium dogs around 8–10, large dogs around 7–8, and giant breeds as early as 5–6 years old.
