Fuel Efficiency

Gas mileage, fuel economy, and trip-cost efficiency

A gas mileage calculator estimates fuel efficiency from distance travelled and fuel used. It can show MPG, litres per 100 km, kilometres per litre, and trip fuel cost, making it a practical conversion calculator and everyday planning tool for drivers comparing journeys or vehicles.

What gas mileage is measuring

Gas mileage is a measure of how efficiently a vehicle turns fuel into distance. In imperial terms it is often expressed as miles per gallon, while in metric contexts it is often shown as litres per 100 kilometres. These numbers describe the same underlying relationship from different directions.

A gas mileage calculator is useful because the same trip can be expressed in several ways. Some drivers think in MPG, others in L/100km, and others simply want a quick calculator for fuel cost or expected range. Converting between those views helps you compare vehicles and journeys more clearly.

Core fuel-economy formulas

The underlying maths is straightforward. Efficiency is distance divided by fuel if you are working in MPG or kilometres per litre. The L/100km format reverses the relationship and scales it to 100 kilometres.

MPG = Miles travelled / Gallons used

This is the standard imperial gas mileage formula.

L/100km = (Litres used / Kilometres travelled) x 100

This is the standard metric fuel-consumption formula.

Trip fuel cost = Fuel used x Fuel price per unit

Once fuel used and unit price are known, trip cost follows directly.

Using mileage results well

A free online gas mileage calculator is best used as a real-world estimate, not a laboratory guarantee. Traffic, tyre pressure, speed, weather, terrain, idling time, load, and driving style all affect the result. That is why two vehicles with the same official rating can still behave differently in everyday use.

Even with that limitation, it remains a very practical calculator. It helps compare cost per trip, check whether fuel economy is getting worse over time, and translate between imperial and metric efficiency measures without forcing the user to do the conversion by hand.
