Marks percentage calculator: convert marks to percentage and grade

The marks percentage calculator converts raw marks obtained out of a total into a percentage score, assigns a letter grade (A+, A, B, C, D, or F), maps the result to a GPA point on a 4.0 scale, and shows whether the result is a pass or fail. Enter the marks obtained and the total marks available for an instant result.

How percentage and grade are calculated

The percentage is calculated by dividing the marks obtained by the total marks and multiplying by 100. This single formula applies regardless of the total — whether the exam was out of 50, 100, 500, or any other value. The percentage normalises all results to a 0–100 scale for easy comparison.

The letter grade is assigned based on the percentage using a standard scale: 90–100 earns an A+ (or A in some systems), 80–89 earns an A (or B), 70–79 earns a B (or C), 60–69 earns a C (or D), 50–59 earns a D, and below 50 is an F (fail). Note that grade boundaries vary between institutions and countries — this scale is the most common international standard.

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100

For example, 72 out of 90: (72 ÷ 90) × 100 = 80%.

GPA (4.0 scale) ≈ (Percentage − 50) ÷ 12.5 (for scores 50–100)

An approximation; exact conversions vary by institution.

Grade scales and passing thresholds

Passing thresholds differ by institution and subject. Most universities require at least 40% or 50% to pass a module; professional licensing exams often require 60% or 70%. The calculator defaults to 40% as the pass threshold, which is the most common minimum in secondary education, but this can be adjusted.

The GPA (Grade Point Average) is widely used in the United States and Canada. A 4.0 GPA corresponds to an A (90–100%), a 3.0 to a B (80–89%), a 2.0 to a C (70–79%), a 1.0 to a D (60–69%), and a 0.0 to an F. Other countries use different scales: the UK uses a 1st/2:1/2:2/3rd/Fail degree classification; India commonly uses a percentage or a 10-point CGPA. Always check the specific scale used by your institution.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my percentage if marks are out of a number other than 100?

Use the formula: Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100. For example, if you scored 45 out of 60, your percentage is (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 75%. The calculator handles any total automatically.

What is the difference between percentage and percentile?

Percentage is your score expressed out of 100, based only on your own marks. Percentile is your rank relative to other test-takers: a 90th percentile means you scored higher than 90% of all candidates, regardless of your actual percentage score. The calculator computes percentage, not percentile.

How is GPA calculated from percentage?

Conversion formulas vary by institution. A common approximation used in India is GPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. In the US 4.0 system, A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with plus/minus grades getting ±0.3. Always use your specific institution's official conversion table for official purposes.
