Pace and Distance Calculator

Whether you are planning a race, tracking a training run, or setting a target pace, this calculator solves for the missing variable in the pace-time-distance triangle. Enter any two values and the third is calculated instantly.

Understanding running pace

Pace is the time taken to cover one unit of distance — typically minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile. A pace of 5:00/km means five minutes to cover one kilometre, equivalent to 12 km/h. Knowing your pace allows you to predict finish times for target races and set appropriate training zones.

Using the splits table

The splits table shows your cumulative time at each kilometre or mile marker, assuming an even (constant) pace throughout. Real-world running rarely maintains perfectly even splits, but the table provides a useful pacing target and helps identify how far you can get in a given time.

Frequently asked questions

What is negative splitting?

A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first. Most world records are set with negative or even splits. The splits table in this calculator assumes even pace; to plan negative splits, calculate finish times for each half separately.

Can I use this for cycling or rowing?

Yes. The pace-time-distance relationship is the same for any activity with a linear distance and consistent effort. Simply use the unit (km or miles) appropriate for the activity.
