Screen dimensions, width, height, and area from diagonal and aspect ratio

A screen size calculator finds the physical width, height, and area of a display from its diagonal measurement and aspect ratio. It is useful for comparing monitors, TVs, tablets, and phone screens when only the diagonal is listed in a spec sheet.

Why diagonal alone does not tell the full story

Screen diagonal is the most commonly advertised measurement, but two screens with the same diagonal can have very different usable areas depending on their aspect ratio. A 27-inch ultrawide (21:9) is significantly wider and less tall than a 27-inch standard monitor (16:9), even though both measure 27 inches corner to corner.

Understanding actual width and height is useful when planning a desk setup, comparing workspace for side-by-side windows, estimating viewing distance, or simply verifying whether a screen will fit a specific space.

Width = Diagonal × ratio_w / √(ratio_w² + ratio_h²)

The aspect ratio components define the proportions; the Pythagorean theorem relates the diagonal to those proportions.

Height = Diagonal × ratio_h / √(ratio_w² + ratio_h²)

Same relationship applied to the height dimension.

Area = Width × Height

Total screen area in square inches or square centimetres.

Common aspect ratios and their use cases

The 16:9 ratio is standard for most consumer TVs, monitors, and laptops. The 16:10 ratio gives slightly more vertical space and remains popular for productivity monitors and laptops. Ultrawide formats (21:9 and 32:9) are favoured for immersive gaming and multi-window workflows.

Tablets and older monitors often use 4:3, which gives a more square shape suited to reading and document work. Smartphones typically use tall formats such as 19.5:9 or 20:9 to fit more content on a narrow handheld screen.

Frequently asked questions

How is screen diagonal measured?

Screen diagonal is measured corner to corner across the active display area, not including any bezel. Manufacturers have historically measured the full panel, which may include a few millimetres of non-visible area at the edges. The advertised size should be treated as approximate.

Does a larger screen area mean better image quality?

Not necessarily. Image quality depends on resolution, panel technology (IPS, OLED, VA), refresh rate, and colour accuracy. A larger screen with the same resolution as a smaller one will actually have lower pixel density (PPI), which can make text and fine detail look less sharp at close viewing distances.

Why does my 27-inch monitor look smaller than someone else's 27-inch TV?

TVs are commonly designed for viewing from across a room, so the physical dimensions may be similar but the pixel density is lower and the design is different. The diagonal measurement is the same, but the quality and context of the display differ significantly.
