Steps in a Mile Calculator

How many steps are in a mile? The answer varies with your height, sex, and pace — there is no single universal number. A tall man running covers a mile in far fewer steps than a short woman walking slowly. This calculator uses sex-differentiated stride multipliers to compute a personalised steps-per-mile figure, alongside steps per kilometre, stride length, and an estimated walk time.

Why steps per mile varies

Steps per mile is simply the total distance (160,934.4 cm) divided by your step length. Step length — half of a full stride — is tightly correlated with height. Male stride multipliers tend to be slightly higher than female multipliers at equivalent heights, reflecting average biomechanical differences in hip width, gait pattern, and leg-to-torso ratio. These differences are modest (around 5%) but measurable across large populations.

Pace is the dominant variable. Slow walking (< 2.5 mph) typically uses about 41% of height as stride for men and 39% for women. Brisk walking and running progressively lengthen the stride as a proportion of height. A man of 175 cm jogging will take about 1,000 fewer steps per mile than he does at a slow walk.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps per mile is average?

For an average adult of around 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) walking at a moderate pace, approximately 2,000–2,200 steps per mile is typical. Women of the same height tend toward the higher end of this range due to shorter stride length. At a brisk walk the count is closer to 1,800–2,000.

Does running use more or fewer steps than walking?

Running uses significantly fewer steps per mile than walking because running stride length is much longer — roughly 35% longer than a walking stride at the same height. A 175 cm man takes about 2,130 steps per mile walking but only around 1,600 steps per mile running.
