What this take-home pay calculator includes
In US mode, the calculator estimates 2026 federal income tax after the standard deduction and adds employee Social Security and Medicare withholding. It also lets you enter income-tax pretax deductions, other after-tax deductions, and a monthly take-home budget so the estimate is more useful for paycheck planning than a bare salary-after-tax number.
In UK mode, it estimates 2026/27 income tax plus employee Class 1 National Insurance, supports England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, and can include salary-sacrifice pension deductions plus a selected student-loan plan. That makes the page useful for salary comparisons, household budgeting, and quick gross-to-net pay checks while still keeping the scope honest.
This is not a full payroll engine. Real payslips can include state or local tax, tax-code changes, benefits, overtime, bonuses, employer-specific deductions, and other adjustments beyond the baseline payroll taxes and user-entered deductions modelled here.
Why gross pay and net pay differ
Gross pay is the full salary before deductions. Net pay, or take-home pay, is what remains after the taxes included in the selected mode are removed. Because both the US and UK systems use layered tax bands and payroll deductions, take-home pay rises more slowly than gross pay as income increases.
This is why the effective tax rate and total deduction rate matter. The effective tax rate shows the tax burden from the payroll taxes included in the selected mode. The total deduction rate also includes entered deductions, which is often closer to the way a paycheck calculator user thinks about the money that actually reaches a bank account.
Net pay = Gross pay - Total tax - Payroll deductions
This is the main relationship used to convert annual gross salary into annual, monthly, bi-weekly, and weekly take-home pay.
Effective tax rate = Total deductions / Gross pay x 100
The effective rate summarizes the overall share of income removed by the taxes included in the selected mode.
Budget gap = Monthly budget - estimated monthly take-home pay
A positive gap means the estimate is under the target budget; a negative gap means it is above the target budget.
Worked example: 75,000 in US mode with deductions
Suppose gross annual salary is 75,000 in US mode for a single filer. If you enter 6,000 of income-tax pretax deductions and 1,200 of other after-tax deductions, the calculator applies the federal income-tax calculation to the reduced taxable salary, still estimates Social Security and Medicare on gross salary, then subtracts the entered deductions from take-home pay.
That worked flow is useful because it shows where the main difference comes from: federal income tax is only one layer. Payroll taxes and known deductions can still reduce the final net pay even when taxable income is lowered by a pretax entry first.

UK mode is a PAYE-style salary calculator for the current UK tax year. It supports UK nation selection, Scottish income-tax bands where relevant, salary-sacrifice pension deductions, and common student-loan plans. It still excludes tax-code adjustments, benefits in kind, bonuses, multiple jobs, and non-salary income.
What this estimate excludes
This routed variant intentionally stays narrow so the scope is truthful. It does not include state or local income tax in the US, employer-specific withholding elections, tax credits, benefits, bonuses, overtime rules, tax-code changes, or full payslip reproduction.
UK mode now supports nation selection, salary-sacrifice pension percentage, and one selected student-loan plan, but it still does not model every real payroll arrangement.
