Test grade calculator: percentage, letter grade, and pass/fail from your score

The test grade calculator turns raw test or exam scores into a percentage, letter grade, GPA equivalent, and pass/fail result. Enter total questions and correct answers (or total points and points earned) for an instant breakdown. The grade scale and pass threshold are fully customisable.

How the test grade percentage is calculated

The percentage is calculated by dividing the number of correct answers (or points earned) by the total number of questions (or total points) and multiplying by 100. This formula works regardless of the total: a 17-out-of-20 quiz and an 85-out-of-100 exam both produce 85%.

The calculator supports two input modes. "Questions" mode is designed for tests graded by counting correct answers. "Points" mode is for exams where each question may carry a different point value or partial credit is given.

Percentage = (Correct ÷ Total) × 100

For example, 17 correct out of 20 questions: (17 ÷ 20) × 100 = 85%.

Letter grades and the grading scale

The default grading scale follows the most common US academic standard: A = 90–100%, B = 80–89%, C = 70–79%, D = 60–69%, and F = 0–59%. Each letter grade maps to a GPA equivalent on a 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0.

Grade scales vary between schools, districts, and countries. Many institutions use plus/minus grades (A+, A−, B+, etc.) or different thresholds. The calculator allows you to customise the minimum percentage for each letter grade so it matches your institution's policy.

Pass/fail threshold and how to interpret results

The pass threshold defaults to 60%, which is common in many US school systems. You can adjust this to match your institution — for example, 50% is typical in UK universities, while professional licensing exams often require 70% or higher.

The result panel shows the number of questions answered incorrectly (or points lost) alongside the pass/fail status. Use this to identify how many more correct answers would be needed to cross the pass threshold or reach a higher letter grade.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my test grade as a percentage?

Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100. For example, 42 correct out of 50 questions gives (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%. The calculator handles this automatically for both question-count and point-based tests.

What letter grade is a 75% on a test?

On the standard US grading scale (A = 90–100, B = 80–89, C = 70–79, D = 60–69, F = below 60), a 75% is a C. However, some schools use different scales, so always check your institution's specific thresholds.

Can I use this for tests where questions have different point values?

Yes. Switch to "Points" mode and enter the total points possible and the points you earned. The calculator will compute the percentage, letter grade, and pass/fail status the same way, regardless of whether all questions carry equal weight.

Does this calculator account for plus/minus grades like A+ or B−?

The default scale uses whole letter grades (A, B, C, D, F). It does not subdivide into plus/minus variants. If your institution uses plus/minus grades, use the result percentage and consult your school's specific grade table for the precise letter assignment.
