How to add fractions with like and unlike denominators

An adding fractions calculator finds the sum of two or more fractions by converting them to a common denominator, adding the numerators, and simplifying the result. It handles proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers, making it a quick way to check homework, recipes, and measurement sums.

Why a common denominator is needed

Fractions can only be added directly when their denominators are the same, because the denominator defines the size of each part. When denominators differ, each fraction must be rewritten over a shared denominator so the parts being added are equal in size.

The least common denominator is the smallest number that both denominators divide into evenly. Using it keeps the numbers as small as possible and makes the final simplification step easier.

Adding fractions formula

For two fractions with different denominators, the standard cross-multiply approach rewrites both fractions over the product of the two denominators, then adds the adjusted numerators.

a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd

Multiply each numerator by the other denominator, add the results, and place the sum over the product of the two denominators.

Simplifying the result

After adding, the resulting fraction should be reduced to lowest terms by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor. If the result is an improper fraction, it can also be expressed as a mixed number for easier interpretation.

This calculator performs all of these steps automatically, showing the unsimplified sum, the simplified fraction, and the mixed-number equivalent when applicable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add more than two fractions at once?

Yes. Find a common denominator for all fractions, convert each one, then add all the numerators together over that shared denominator and simplify.

What if one of the fractions is negative?

Treat the negative sign as part of the numerator. The same common-denominator process applies; the negative numerator simply subtracts from the total when the numerators are combined.
