BMI Basics

Body mass index, height, weight, and BMI ranges

A BMI calculator estimates body mass index from height and weight. BMI is a screening measure rather than a direct measure of body fat, but it remains widely used because it is quick to calculate and easy to compare across standard adult ranges.

The basic BMI formulas

The metric formula divides weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. The imperial formula uses pounds and inches and includes a conversion factor.

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)^2

This is the standard metric expression for body mass index.

BMI = 703 x weight (lb) / height (in)^2

The constant 703 converts imperial units to the metric equivalent.

How BMI categories are used

BMI categories are usually presented as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity ranges. These categories are used as broad screening bands, not as direct statements about an individual person's health status.

Because BMI does not measure fat distribution, muscle mass, age, or sex-specific body characteristics directly, it works best as an entry point for discussion rather than a complete health assessment.
