Islamic Holiday Calculator

Find approximate Gregorian dates for Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and other Islamic observances using the tabular Hijri calendar.

About the Islamic calendar

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is a purely lunar calendar of 12 months. Each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, making the calendar approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year.

This calculator uses the tabular (arithmetic) Hijri calendar, which is deterministic and widely used for planning purposes.

Important notice These dates are approximate. Actual dates depend on the sighting of the crescent moon by local religious authorities and may differ by 1–2 days. Always confirm with your local mosque or Islamic authority.

About these dates

The Islamic calendar is purely lunar, so holidays shift approximately 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year. Some holidays may occur twice in a single Gregorian year or not at all.

Laylat al-Qadr is traditionally observed on the 27th of Ramadan, but scholars note it may fall on any odd night in the last ten days of Ramadan. Mawlid al-Nabi is observed on 12 Rabi al-Awwal in most Sunni traditions and 17 Rabi al-Awwal in many Shia traditions.

Islamic Holiday Calculator

Find approximate Gregorian dates for Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and other Islamic observances using the tabular Hijri calendar.

How It Works

The tabular Hijri calendar uses an arithmetic algorithm to compute dates deterministically. A 30-year cycle determines leap years, with months alternating between 30 and 29 days. The calculator converts Hijri dates to Gregorian to find when each observance falls.

Moon Sighting

Actual Islamic dates depend on the sighting of the crescent moon by local religious authorities. The tabular calendar provides estimates that are typically within one to two days of observed dates. Always verify with your local community for official dates.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Islamic holidays shift earlier each year?

The Islamic year is approximately 354 days — about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year — so holidays move roughly 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year.

How accurate are these dates?

Tabular calendar dates are within 1–2 days of observed dates. Actual observance depends on local moon sighting, which can vary by region.
