How ratios map to fractions
A ratio A:B describes the relationship between two quantities. To express this as a fraction, write A as the numerator and B as the denominator: A/B. The fraction is then simplified by dividing both terms by their greatest common divisor. For example, 6:8 becomes 6/8, which simplifies to 3/4.
For ratios with more than two parts (e.g., 2:3:5), each part can be expressed as a fraction of the total. The total is 2 + 3 + 5 = 10, so the parts are 2/10, 3/10, and 5/10, which simplify to 1/5, 3/10, and 1/2.
