Ratio to percent calculator: express each ratio part as a percentage

A ratio to percent calculator converts a ratio into percentage shares, showing what proportion of the total each part represents. This is useful whenever you need to communicate a ratio in percentage terms, such as vote shares, portfolio allocations, ingredient proportions, or survey results.

How the conversion works

To convert a ratio A:B to percentages, first find the total: A + B. Then divide each part by the total and multiply by 100. For a ratio of 3:2, the total is 5. The first part is 3/5 x 100 = 60%, and the second is 2/5 x 100 = 40%. The percentages always sum to 100%.

The same method extends to ratios with three or more parts. A ratio of 1:2:2 has a total of 5, giving 20%, 40%, and 40%.

Part % = (Part / Sum of all parts) x 100

Each part of the ratio as a percentage of the total.

Reading percentage shares

Percentage shares make ratios easier to compare across different totals. A fundraising split of 7:3 means 70% goes to one cause and 30% to another, regardless of the total raised. Expressing the ratio as percentages strips away the absolute scale and highlights the proportional relationship.

Frequently asked questions

Do the percentages always add up to 100%?

Yes. Since each percentage is calculated as a share of the total, they must sum to exactly 100%. Rounding may cause tiny discrepancies in display, but the underlying values are exact.

How do I go from percentages back to a ratio?

Write each percentage as a number, then simplify by dividing all values by their greatest common divisor. For 60% and 40%, write 60:40, then divide by 20 to get 3:2.
