Percent of number calculator: find any percentage of any value

A percent of number calculator answers the question "what is X% of Y?" by multiplying the base value by the percentage expressed as a decimal. It can also reverse the calculation to find what percent one number is of another, or find the base value when the percentage and result are known.

Three percentage problems

Percentage questions come in three forms: (1) What is 15% of 200? Multiply: 0.15 x 200 = 30. (2) 30 is what percent of 200? Divide: 30 / 200 x 100 = 15%. (3) 30 is 15% of what number? Divide: 30 / 0.15 = 200. This calculator solves all three by letting you enter any two of the three values.

Part = (Percent / 100) x Whole

Find the part by multiplying the whole by the percentage expressed as a decimal.

Percent = (Part / Whole) x 100

Find what percentage the part is of the whole.

Everyday uses

Tips, discounts, taxes, and commissions are all percentage-of-number problems. A 20% tip on a 45 dollar meal is 0.20 x 45 = 9 dollars. A 30% discount on a 120 item saves 0.30 x 120 = 36.

In academic grading, scoring 42 out of 50 translates to 42 / 50 x 100 = 84%. Understanding the relationship between part, whole, and percentage makes these calculations straightforward.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number in my head?

Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then adjust. For 15%, add half of 10% to 10%. For 25%, divide by 4. For 1%, move the decimal two places left.

What does "percentage points" mean compared to "percent"?

A change from 10% to 15% is a 5 percentage point increase, but a 50% increase in the rate itself. Percentage points measure the absolute difference between two percentages; percent measures the relative change.
