Percentage questions come in three forms: (1) What is 15% of 200? Multiply: 0.15 x 200 = 30. (2) 30 is what percent of 200? Divide: 30 / 200 x 100 = 15%. (3) 30 is 15% of what number? Divide: 30 / 0.15 = 200. This calculator solves all three by letting you enter any two of the three values.

Everyday uses

Tips, discounts, taxes, and commissions are all percentage-of-number problems. A 20% tip on a 45 dollar meal is 0.20 x 45 = 9 dollars. A 30% discount on a 120 item saves 0.30 x 120 = 36.

In academic grading, scoring 42 out of 50 translates to 42 / 50 x 100 = 84%. Understanding the relationship between part, whole, and percentage makes these calculations straightforward.
