Percent to total calculator: find the whole from a part and its percentage

A percent to total calculator finds the total (whole) when you know a part and what percentage that part represents. For example, if 30 is 25% of the total, the total is 120.

Finding the total from a percentage

Divide the part value by the percentage expressed as a decimal: total = part ÷ (percent ÷ 100). For example, if 30 is 25% of the total: total = 30 ÷ 0.25 = 120.

This is the reverse of finding a percentage of a number. Instead of multiplying to find the part, you divide to find the whole.

total = part ÷ (percent ÷ 100)

Reverse percentage formula.

Frequently asked questions

What if the percentage is zero?

The calculation is undefined when the percentage is zero because it would require division by zero.

Can the part be larger than the total?

Yes — if the percentage exceeds 100%, the part value is larger than the total. For example, 150 being 200% of the total gives a total of 75.
