How to estimate roofing materials for any project

A roofing calculator converts roof dimensions and pitch into the number of squares, shingle bundles, underlayment rolls, and accessories needed for a full re-roof or new build. This guide explains roofing squares, waste factors, and how pitch affects material quantities.

Understanding roofing squares

Roofing materials are sold by the square, where one square covers 100 square feet of roof area. To find the number of squares you need, divide the total roof area by 100. Because roof area is measured along the slope rather than the horizontal footprint, steeper roofs require more material per footprint square foot.

A typical bundle of three-tab shingles covers one third of a square, so three bundles equal one square. Architectural shingles may need four or five bundles per square depending on the product.

Roof area = Footprint area x Slope factor

The slope factor converts flat footprint area to sloped surface area based on roof pitch.

Squares = Roof area / 100

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface.

Waste and complexity adjustments

Simple gable roofs typically need a 5 to 10 percent waste factor, while complex hip roofs with valleys and dormers may require 15 percent or more. Starter strips, ridge cap, and hip shingles are calculated separately from field shingle quantities.

Frequently asked questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need per square?

Most three-tab shingles require three bundles per square. Architectural or dimensional shingles vary by manufacturer and may need four or five bundles per square.

Does roof pitch change material quantity?

Yes. Steeper roofs have more surface area for the same footprint, so they require more shingles, underlayment, and fasteners.
