Calculating a complete roofing material list

A roofing material calculator goes beyond shingle count to build a full bill of materials including underlayment, drip edge, flashing, ridge vent, and fasteners. This guide covers how each component quantity is derived from roof geometry.

Component breakdown

Underlayment is calculated from roof area and roll coverage, typically 400 square feet for a standard roll of synthetic underlayment. Drip edge is measured in linear feet along eaves and rakes. Step flashing is counted per piece at each shingle course where the roof meets a vertical wall.

Roofing nails are estimated at four to six per shingle for standard installations, with high-wind zones requiring six nails per shingle.

Ridge vent and hip cap

Ridge vent length matches the ridge line. Hip cap shingles are sold in bundles that cover a set linear footage. Both are calculated from the roof plan view showing ridge and hip line lengths.

Frequently asked questions

How much underlayment do I need?

Divide the total roof area by the roll coverage (usually 400 sq ft for synthetic). Add 10 percent for overlaps at seams and ridges.

How many roofing nails per square?

A typical square uses about 320 nails at four per shingle. High-wind zones may require 480 nails per square at six per shingle.
