Pounds and cups calculator: ingredient-specific cup equivalents for a pound

Convert between pounds and cups for common cooking and baking ingredients such as flour, sugar, butter, oats, and honey. Because a pound is a fixed weight but a cup is a volume measure, the result depends entirely on the ingredient density you select.

How the pounds-and-cups conversion works

One pound always equals 453.592 grams. To convert pounds into cups, the calculator divides that weight by the ingredient density in grams per cup. To convert cups into pounds, it multiplies the cup amount by the same density and then divides by 453.592 grams per pound.

This tool uses the same ingredient-density assumptions as the cups-to-grams and grams-to-cups calculators, covering flours, sugars, butter, liquids, syrups, oats, cocoa powder, nuts, and other common baking ingredients.

Cups = Pounds × 453.592 g ÷ Density (g/cup)

Example: 1 lb of all-purpose flour at 125 g/cup = about 3.63 cups.

Pounds = Cups × Density (g/cup) ÷ 453.592 g

Example: 2 cups of honey at 340 g/cup = about 1.50 lb.

Why a pound of one ingredient is not the same number of cups as another

A pound of honey occupies much less space than a pound of oats because honey is denser. That is why a pound of honey is only about 1.33 cups, while a pound of rolled oats is more than 5 cups.

This difference is especially important in baking. If you treat all ingredients as though one pound equals the same number of cups, hydration, sweetness, texture, and yield can all drift away from the intended recipe.

When to use pounds and when to use cups

Pounds are better for shopping, batching, and scaling ingredient orders. Cups are better when you only have household measuring tools available at the point of cooking. If you can choose one system for repeatable baking, weight usually wins.

If your recipe already lists grams, use the gram value directly rather than converting to pounds first. Each extra conversion step adds rounding and measurement noise.

Using the standard all-purpose flour assumption of 125 g per US cup, 1 pound of flour is about 3.63 cups. Bread flour is slightly denser, so 1 pound is about 3.49 cups.

How many cups are in 1 pound of sugar?

For granulated sugar at 200 g per cup, 1 pound is about 2.27 cups. Brown sugar packed at 220 g per cup is closer to 2.06 cups per pound.

Can I use one fixed pounds-to-cups ratio for every ingredient?

No. Pounds measure weight and cups measure volume, so the ratio changes with ingredient density. Honey, flour, oats, butter, and sugar all produce different numbers of cups per pound.
